Wet concrete needs less volume than the dry ingredients that make it

Loose sand and aggregate have air gaps between the particles — mixing needs roughly 1.54 times the dry volume of materials to produce one unit volume of finished, settled concrete.

Why it works

Skipping this dry-volume correction is the single most common reason people under-order concrete materials — the raw 1:2:4 ratio by itself doesn’t account for how much the loose ingredients compact once mixed and cured.

When it fails

The 1.54 factor is for a typical mix with typical bulking. Damp sand can bulk by 20–30%, which changes the figure before you start, and a heavily air-entrained or lightweight mix does not compact the same way. Measure the sand dry, or measure it wet and correct for it.
