Safety factor 2 — or 4 with people involved

Use a safety factor around 2 for well-known static loads, 4 or more for dynamic loads, uncertainty, or human safety.

Why it works

Classic machine-design guidance (Vidosic). The factor covers what you did not model: overloads, defects, corrosion, misuse.

When it fails

A factor of 4 on a load you have guessed is not conservatism, it is a guess with a larger number attached. And it does not travel across failure modes: 4× on peak stress says nothing about a part that will see 10⁶ cycles, because fatigue, buckling and brittle fracture do not scale the way static strength does.
